What next?

The next morning Lanie woke up without the alarm. She looked at the clock on the bedside table and saw it was, once again, before six. Not typically an early riser, she wondered what was happening to her. That question could apply to so many things lately. Instead of ruminating on the subject, she decided to take the morning Vinyasa Flow class. A little yoga couldn’t hurt; besides, that was the one place she could go to blank out all the questions.

With renewed motivation for a little self-care, she made coffee and went about her routine. Taking a quick shower, she snugged on a pair of black Capri-length stretch pants and a pink tank. After slipping on flip-flops and finding her mat, she left the building. The studio was a few blocks away and the morning light was beautiful. Covering the distance quickly, Lanie felt empowered by the simple task of putting one foot in front of the other.

When she arrived, she was greeted by the familiar faces of her fellow practitioners. Monique, her favorite instructor, welcomed her and told her she would need two blocks for today’s class. Lanie gathered the props then settled onto her mat. Deciding on the intention, “live in the moment,” she closed her eyes until the class began.

At 8 a.m. sharp, Monique called the group to their feet. As instructed, Lanie traveled through the poses. Each time her mind wandered, she brought everything back to her practice. Determination pushed her as she took the poses to heart, contorting herself toward an impossible elegance. She was invigorated, if not angry. Pouring all of her emotion into the moves, she felt liberated.

At the end, Shavasana was the only time where she couldn’t stop her mind from racing. Sensing her activity, Monique came to her mat and rubbed lemon essential oil at her temples and down the sides of her neck. Accepting her gentle nudge, she relaxed. If there was one thing that yoga had taught Lanie, it was that everything would be all right.

Finally, they were guided to find a comfortable seated position. Lanie placed her hands in prayer at her heart and mentally thanked Monique for her wisdom and kindness. She then wished that same wisdom and kindness on her fellow classmates and finally herself. Slowly people stood, rolled up mats and returned their props.

Monique spoke to Lanie. “How are you doing today? I sensed a little tension?”

“You are so intuitive. I’m working through something. Thank you for the extra care.”

Monique had a peaceful beauty that glowed as she said, “Remember, take every moment for what it is. Things have a way of working themselves out.”

Feeling transparent, as though Monique were a clairvoyant, Lanie managed a nonverbal response. Touching Monique’s arm, she nodded her head and went for the exit. After collecting her bag, Lanie checked her phone and noticed she’d missed a call from James. Nervously she redialed the number but got his voicemail. It was just after 9:30 a.m., so he was probably out fishing or on a hike.
